How much does it cost to participate?
The Parkway Program provides participants with a planting kit containing CA native plants, mulch and stepping stones all free of charge. The program is designed to simplify and encourage the DIY process. Participants seeking professional assistance for site preparation and or installation will be responsible for those associated labor costs.
What happens if I don’t remove the turf in my parkway project in the allotted time?
Unfortunately, due to the seasonal availability of plants, your reservation in the program may be cancelled. Feel free to apply again in the future.
How do I get my voucher?
In order to receive your voucher, you must have first applied to the program, been approved, and notify Long Beach Utilities that your turf has been removed. Once Long Beach Utilities verifies your selected plant kit availability at a local partnering nursery we will notify you that it is time to pick up your plants.
Can I sell or give away my voucher?
Vouchers are non-transferable and can only be redeemed by the program applicant.
Can I install other plants in my parkway?
Yes, you may. Please be advised that plants will look sparse when first planted. While it may look like there is room to plant more, within 6 months to a year these plants will reach a much larger mature growth size.
Additionally, any new plants you install must maintain the Parkway Program’s 100% California native plant goal. If you are unclear whether a plant is a California native please visit calscape.org
What is the best way to kill my grass?

How much maintenance will my new parkway require?
Native plants are adapted to California’s unique climate, and because of this, established plant will require little long-term maintenance. Keep in mind plants will have to be water more frequently initially after planting. Please review our Parkway Program Resources page for more information.
Can I use my own design when installing the plants?
It is recommended that you adhere as closely as possible to the provided CNPS design. Sticking to the templates helps to ensure that your new parkway will be in compliance with Long Beach City Code. To accommodate parkway features such as trees or water meters, please make any adjustments necessary.
What happens if some of my plants die?
If you notice that your plants aren’t doing to well after installation, please contact Long Beach Utilities as soon as possible so we can best advise and assist with a solution.
